You hit the follow limit again today?

Its a stupid way to lose an afternoon. Four hundred follows sounds like plenty until you sit down with a niche and start working through it. Founders, operators, the accounts that actually post in the corner of the internet you care about. You get a couple dozen in and the button dies.

The daily number

X publishes 400 follows a day and calls it a technical limit. Aggressive following sits under a separate rule. Some people on paid plans say they get more room. X does not publish a higher number, so I would not plan a day around it. Either way, the daily cap is rarely what stops you.

The pace check

There is a second check underneath, and X never gives the figure. The message just says you followed too many accounts too quickly, and that you should try again in an hour or so. People who have tested it put the soft pace somewhere around 30 to 50 follows an hour on a free account, maybe higher if you pay. Those numbers are guesses. Cross whatever the real line is and you sit there locked, with hundreds of follows still left on the day. The same follows spread across the afternoon usually go through. Dumped in one sitting, they do not.

A private list

If the point is to read a whole niche, following everyone is the expensive way to do it. A private list is the cheap one. You make the list, add the accounts, and their posts show up in that list’s own timeline. Adding someone does not follow them, so it never touches the daily cap or the pace check. A private list stays invisible to the people on it. X allows 5,000 accounts on a single list and up to 1,000 lists on an account, which is more room than this job needs.

I keep one for the niche I am trying to learn, and I only follow the accounts I want in the main feed or might actually reply to. Same posts. Same signal. No lockout in the middle of the afternoon.

Don’t churn

The old growth move is the one worth skipping. Follow a pile of people, wait for the follow-backs, unfollow the rest. X names that in the rules. Follow churn: following and then unfollowing large numbers of accounts to inflate your own count. Indiscriminate following sits right next to it. Accounts get restricted for it, and some get suspended. A list gets you the reading without the churn, which is the part that gets people in trouble.
